- Walking Walking · movement song ↗Use before seated book work. Model actions in place.
- Starfall ABCs · letter exploration ↗Choose the lesson’s letter with your class. Best after introducing its sound.
- British Council · word games ↗Select the topic first; reading tasks need teacher help for beginners.
Our games add oral practice to the curriculum. They do not measure a child’s English level.
Teaching guide
Original Teacher’s Guide. Each 40-minute lesson covers two guide periods.
1. Words and Story
W1 P1Intro to class theme + Vocabulary — Student Book (Words)
Lesson Goals
- To introduce that different animals live in different places
- To develop curiosity about the world and nature
Students will be able to
- Recognize that different animals live in different places
- Use simple English sentences to describe animals and say their names confidently
1. Warm-Up
Hello Song · “How are you?” · “How’s the weather today?” · Day of the week check
2. Introduce Characters (Student Book pg 4-5)
- a) Name & Identification. Point to each character and say the name clearly. “This is Boogi. Everyone say, ‘Hello, Boogi!’” “This is Otto. Can you say, ‘Hi, Otto’?” “This is Hoggy. Everyone, ‘Hoggy!’” Review: point to a random character and ask, “Who is this?”
- b) Engaging with Character Stories. “Who is the leader of the team?” (Boogi!) “Who likes to surf?” (Otto!) “Who is a food YouTuber?” (Hoggy!) “Who is Jindo looking for?” (Her owner!) “Tigo has a big imagination! What is he searching for?” (A mystery creature!)
- c) Personal Connection. “Which character is the coolest?” or “Who do you want to play with?”
3. New Unit Introduction (Student Book pg 7)
- Show the picture of the characters visiting the polar bear and ask questions to lead into the theme of “Animals and Habitats”.
- “Who are they saying hello to?” “Where are they now?” “Is it hot or cold?” “Yes! It is a very cold place. There is white ice and cold snow.” “This is the polar bear’s home. Every animal has a special home.” “Today, we are going to learn about animals and their homes.”
4. Vocabulary Introduction (Student Book pg 8)
- a) Introduction. Clearly pronounce the target words (desert, arctic, grassland, desert fox, lion and polar bear). Have students repeat with clear pronunciation. Show pictures or flashcards as you say each word.
- b) Comprehension Check. Ask simple yes/no or choice questions: “Is the polar bear white?” (Yes!) “Does the polar bear live in the Arctic?” (Yes!) “Is the Arctic hot?” (No!) “Does the lion live in the grassland?” (Yes!) “Is the lion blue?” (No!)
- c) Physical Demonstration. Polar bear: stand tall, make big paws with your hands and walk slowly — “I am a big polar bear. Stomp, stomp!” Lion: hands up like claws, a big “Roar!” — “I am a lion. Roar!” Desert fox: hands on top of the head like big pointy ears — “I am a desert fox. I have big ears!” Arctic: hug your body and shiver — “The Arctic is so cold! Brrr!” Grassland: both hands showing tall grass waving in the wind — “The grassland is wide and green!” Desert: wipe sweat from your forehead and fan yourself — “The desert is very hot! Whew!” Students copy the actions as they repeat the word aloud.
- d) Personal Connection. “Which animal do you like?” “Have you seen a lion at the zoo?” “Is the desert fox scary or cute?” “Do you like cold weather like the Arctic?” “Do you like hot weather like the desert?” “Who wants to go to the Arctic and see a polar bear?”
- e) Game — Slow Motion Reveal. i) Cover a large vocabulary flashcard with a piece of paper. ii) Slowly slide the paper to reveal a small part of the image. iii) Students look at the small part and shout the correct word as fast as they can. iv) Gradually reveal more of the card until the correct answer is shouted. v) Show the whole card and have everyone repeat the word together. vi) Repeat with polar bear, lion, desert fox, arctic, grassland, desert.
- f) Point & Repeat (pg. 8). Point to each picture. Say slowly: “Lion. Lion. Repeat after me.” Students repeat in chorus, then individually.
- g) Circle & Say (pg. 8). Teacher models: circle ‘lion’ on the page → say “It’s a lion.” Students take turns circling a word and saying it out loud.
5. Let’s Chant (Student Book pg 9)
- “Now, let’s sing and chant together! This chant is about finding where the polar bear lives!” “Listen carefully and point to the pictures when you hear grassland, desert or Arctic.” (SB p.8)
- Play the chant. Play it again and have students repeat line by line after you. Add actions for each word to make it more interactive.
- Teacher Tip: use this chant repeatedly throughout the unit whenever students need a quick energy boost, transition, or mood change.
6. Wrap-up
- Finish the class with the Goodbye song.
W1 P2Read Together 1 + Workbook (Words)
Lesson Goals
- To engage students in a story-based adventure to explore animals and their habitats
- To build curiosity and comprehension through guessing, listening and story reveals
Students will be able to
- Identify and name key animals and habitats
- Make simple predictions and responses
- Understand and say short descriptive sentences about habitats
1. Warm-Up
Hello Song · “How are you?” · “How’s the weather today?” · Day of the week check
2. Vocabulary Review (Student Book pg 8)
- Review target vocabulary through actions and explanations.
3. Workbook pg 4 — Words
- The teacher reads each word aloud and students circle the matching picture for all 6 words. Check the answers together at the end.
4. Story time (Student Book pg 10-19)
- a) Character Introduction. “Today, we’re going to read a fun story about animals and their homes. Let’s meet the characters!” Introduce Jindo, Boogi, Roo, Otto, Hoggy and Tigo, using pictures or puppets if available. Ask simple questions: “What’s this character’s name?” “What animal do they want to meet?”
- Note for the teacher: skip the traditional picture walk for this lesson. Since the story is structured as a “Guess and Reveal” adventure, keep the mystery alive. Do not show the answer pages (the full animal reveals) until students have had a chance to guess.
- b) Read together (pg 12-19). Read the story aloud one page at a time, slowly and clearly, pausing after each sentence or short phrase. Use the questions or missions in the Find boxes on each page to help students understand the story — these are optional and can be used at the teacher’s discretion.
- i) pg 10–11 (introducing the adventure). “Look at the TV. Who is on the screen?” “What animal do they want to meet?” “Look at the airplane. Let’s go find the polar bear together! Are you ready for the adventure?”
- ii) pg 12-13 (the grassland build-up). Read together: “Look! Hello, polar bear?” Have the students guess which animal is hiding in the grass. “Look at the grass! What animal is it? Is it the polar bear? Let’s see!”
- iii) pg 14-15 (the lion reveal). Turn the page to reveal the lion and react with surprise. “Oh! Is it the polar bear? No, it’s a lion!” Ask about the habitat and read the description together: “Where does the lion live? In the grassland!” “How is the grassland? Let’s read: ‘It’s wide and green.’”
- iv) pg 16-17 (the desert build-up). Read together: “Look! Hello, polar bear?” Have students guess which animal is behind the large cactus. “Look behind the cactus! What do you see? I see a paw and a tail. Is it the polar bear? Let’s see!”
- v) pg 18-19 (the desert fox reveal). Turn the page to reveal the desert fox and react with surprise. “Oh! It’s not the polar bear. Who is it? It’s a desert fox!” Ask about the habitat and read the description together: “Welcome to the desert! How is the desert? Let’s read: ‘It’s hot and dry.’” “We haven’t found the polar bear yet! Let’s keep looking for the polar bear next class!”
5. Wrap-up
- Review target words with the Let’s Chant song, then finish the class with the Goodbye song.
