Original Teacher’s Guide. Each 40-minute lesson covers two guide periods.

1. Words and Story

W1 P1Intro to class theme + Vocabulary — Student Book (Words)

Lesson Goals

  • To introduce the Main Characters to the students
  • To familiarize them with the sensory vocabulary

Students will be able to

  • Identify and name the characters
  • Use and understand the 5 senses vocabulary words (see, hear, taste, touch, smell) through listening, repetition, and student book practice
  • Participate in short communicative exchanges about what senses they are experiencing, using simple sentences like “I see flowers” or “I like the taste of chips”

1. Warm-Up

Hello Song · “How are you?” · “How’s the weather today?” · Day of the week check

2. Introduce Characters (Student Book pg 4-5)

  • a) Introduce Boogi: Say, “This is Boogi,” and have students repeat the name. Ask about Tigo: show Tigo and ask, “What animal is Tigo?” Provide hints if needed. Introducing Otto: say, “Do you know Otto the otter?” Then clarify, “Otto is an otter,” and have students repeat.
  • Review: Point to each character and ask, “Who is this?” Encourage students to say their names.
  • b) Briefly read about the characters to reinforce who they are. Ask: “Who likes to write?” “Who is the team leader?” “What is missing their owner?”

3. Introduce the story and theme (Student Book pg.7)

  • a) Show them the picture of the characters in the forest exploring and using their senses. Ask: “Who is this character, what are they smelling?” “Where are they now?” “What are they doing?” “What sense do you use with your eyes?”
  • Relate the picture to the students: what do they see in the pictures? What are some things you can touch in the picture? What are things you can smell in the picture? What can you hear in a forest?

4. Introduction to vocabulary (Student Book pg.8)

  • a) Vocabulary Introduction. Clearly pronounce the target words. Have students repeat after you.
  • b) Comprehension Check. Ask students if they know the meaning of the words. Encourage explanations in simple English.
  • c) Physical Demonstration. Use gestures or actions to illustrate the meaning of each word. Create brief scenarios to contextualize the vocabulary.
  • d) Contextual Repetition. “What senses can we use for the flower? That’s right, we can SMELL, SEE and TOUCH the flower.” “Boogi is Tigo’s FRIEND and Tigo is also Jindo’s FRIEND.” “These are our ears, we can HEAR with them!” “When we eat food, we are using our mouth to TASTE the food.” “When we pick up our books, what are we doing with our hands? Correct, we are TOUCHING our books.” “What are some smells you like? What are some bad smells you don’t like?”
  • e) Link words to students’ experiences. “Do you like the taste of candy?” “Do you see the color red?” “Can you touch your hair?”
  • f) Interactive Practice. Have the class repeat the word several times together. Ask students to practice saying the word to a partner.

5. Introducing the chant (Student Book pg. 9)

  • “Now, we’re going to sing a chant about our 5 senses! Listen carefully!”
  • Play the 5 Senses chant. Pause after each sentence and have students repeat the words.
  • Play the chant again for fun! You can sing the chant faster or slower so that students can have fun!
W1 P2Read Together 1 + Workbook (Words)

Lesson Goals

  • To reinforce students’ understanding of the 5 senses vocabulary (see, hear, touch, smell, taste and friend) through story engagement and visual association
  • To develop students’ comprehension and speaking confidence by exploring the story through guided questions and interactive reading
  • To connect the story’s theme of friendship and exploration through their senses, likes, dislikes and deductive reasoning

Students will be able to

  • Demonstrate comprehension of the story by answering simple questions about what the characters are doing and what they use to do it (Hear/Ears, Taste/Mouth, Touch/Hands)
  • Actively participate in the story reading and wrap-up activities by repeating sentences, responding to comprehension questions, and using vocabulary stickers correctly on workbook pages 4-5

1. Warm-Up

Hello Song · “How are you?” · “How’s the weather today?” · Day of the week check

1. Student Book pg 8 — vocabulary review

  • Review target vocabulary through actions and explanations. Get students to point to the word that you say. Then ask them to point to the body part they use for the word.

2. Story Time

  • a) Character Introduction. Before opening the book: “Today, we’re going to read a fun story about using our 5 senses! Let’s meet the characters!” Introduce each main character (Jindo, Boogi, Roo, Otto, Hoggy, Tigo). Ask: “What’s this character’s name?” “What is something they like to do?”
  • b) Story Introduction (pgs 10-11). Open to pages 10 and 11. Before reading the text, focus on the illustrations. “Where are they?” (Prompt: “Are they at a baseball stadium, do you like baseball?”) “Where is Otto/Tigo/Jindo?” “Who is missing?”
  • Reinforce vocabulary — pg 12-13: “Tigo is at the stadium, what can he do?” (Guide students to say “SEE” and list things he can see in the stadium and what clue he finds.)
  • pg 14-15: “Where is Roo?” (Guide students to say “baseball stadium”.) “What can she do?” “She can HEAR. What does she hear?”
  • pg 16-17: “Hoggy is eating chicken, what can he do?” (Guide students to say “TASTE”.) “What did they find of Boogi’s?” (Guide students to say “Boogi’s favorite snack”.)
  • pg 18-19: “What can Otto do?” (Guide students to say “TOUCH”.) “What does he use to touch?” “He uses his hands to touch. What does he find? Yes, Boogi’s shoes. What does he feel? Boogi’s shoes are warm.”
  • Allow them to engage as a whole so they don’t feel pressured to speak.

3. Interactive Reading — Student Book

  • Read the story aloud, one page at a time. Read slowly and clearly. Pause after each sentence or short phrase.
  • “What is Tigo doing, what can he SEE?” (Pause and elicit “Boogi’s footprints”.)
  • Connecting to Students’ Lives & Comprehension: “Do you like to eat snacks?” “Do you like baseball?” “Have you been to a baseball game in Busan?”
  • Ask simple comprehension questions: “What did Roo hear?” “What did Otto find?” “What is Hoggy doing?”

4. Workbook pg 4

  • Have the students LOOK and CIRCLE the correct picture to review the vocabulary they have learned for this unit.

5. Wrap-up

  • Finish the class with the See You Later Alligator Song.
