Teaching guide

Original Teacher’s Guide. Each 40-minute lesson covers two guide periods.

1. Words and Story

W1 P1Intro to class theme + Vocabulary — Student Book (Words)

Lesson Goals

  • To help students recognize and describe the main characters (Boogi, Tigo, Otto, Hoggy, Roo and Jindo) and understand each character’s differences
  • To build students’ vocabulary related to differences and festivals through repetition, gestures and contextual practice
  • To encourage students to make personal connections by expressing their own differences and friendships in simple English

Students will be able to

  • Identify and name the characters and their differences using key phrases
  • Use and understand the target festival vocabulary (festival, messy, tail, sweep, different, flag, wind, help) through listening, repetition and workbook practice
  • Participate in short communicative exchanges about their own or others’ differences using simple sentences

1. Warm-Up

Hello Song · “How are you?” · “How’s the weather today?” · Day of the week check

2. Introduce Characters (Student Book pg 4-5)

  • a) Introduce Boogi: “This is Boogi,” and have students repeat the name. Ask about Tigo: show Tigo and ask “What animal is Tigo?”, providing hints if needed. Introduce Otto: “Do you know Otto?” then “What animal is Otto?” Review: point to each character and ask “Who is this?”
  • b) Briefly read about the characters to reinforce who they are. Ask questions to engage them: “Who is a seagull?” “Who likes to watch stars?” “Who plays music?”

3. Introduce the story and theme (Student Book pg. 7)

  • a) Show the picture of the characters in their various outfits. “Who is this character, what are they wearing?” “Where are they?” “What are they doing?” “Who is playing the guitar?” “What character would you like to be?” Relate the picture to the students’ lives and ask how they are the same or different in appearance or clothes.
  • b) Mention the various differences in appearance between the characters. First explain that although the characters wear different outfits and look different, they are still friends.
  • “Otto has curly hair and is wearing swimming shorts.” “Roo has long blonde hair and is wearing a warm jacket.” “Hoggy is dressed like a mariachi and is playing the guitar.” “Tigo is wearing shorts, sandals and a floral shirt — where do you think Tigo is going?” “Jindo is wearing a colorful headdress and poncho — would you want to wear this?” “What is Boogi wearing?” “From what country is that?”

4. Introduction to vocabulary (Student Book pg. 8)

  • a) Vocabulary Introduction. Clearly pronounce the target words and have students repeat.
  • b) Comprehension Check. Ask students if they know the meaning of the words. Encourage explanations in simple English.
  • c) Physical Demonstration. Use gestures or actions to illustrate the meaning of each word. Create brief scenarios to contextualize the vocabulary.
  • d) Contextual Repetition. “What’s this part of Roo’s body called?” “Which balloon is a different color? — The blue balloon.” “What makes trees shake? — The wind!” “Where are they? — They are at a festival.” “Otto is covered in ice cream. Is he clean? — No, he’s messy.” “What do you call the color shape on a string? — A flag.” “The boy is helping his mom.” “You sweep things up to clean them, can you see?”
  • e) Personal Connection. “Do you like going to festivals? What festivals have you been to?” “Do you help your Mom and Dad? What do you do?” “Is your bedroom messy?” “What colors are on the flag of Korea?” “What’s the weather like today? Is it windy?” “How are your clothes different? What color are they?”
  • f) Interactive Practice. Have the class repeat the word several times together. Ask students to practice saying the word to a partner.

Workbook page 4-5: Words

  • After introducing and practicing the vocabulary you can see if the students have understood you. Go to workbook pages 4-5 and circle the correct picture representation of the words.

5. Introduce the song (Student book pg. 9)

  • “Now, we’re going to sing a song about how we are different but still friends! Listen carefully!” Play the chant. Pause after each sentence and have students repeat the words. Play the song again for fun — faster or slower so that students can enjoy it.
W1 P2Read Together 1 + Workbook (Words)

Lesson Goals

  • To reinforce students’ understanding of the target vocabulary (tail, different, festival, wind, sweep, flag, messy, help) through story engagement and visual association
  • To develop students’ comprehension and speaking confidence by exploring the story through guided questions and interactive reading
  • To connect the story’s theme of differences and festivals to students’ own interests, encouraging self-expression and participation in English

Students will be able to

  • Recognize and say the target vocabulary words when shown pictures or during story discussions
  • Identify and describe the main characters and their differences using simple sentences (e.g. “Roo has a long tail”)
  • Respond to comprehension questions about the story and express personal abilities using simple English (e.g. “I can swim,” “I help my Mom”)

1. Warm-Up

Hello Song · “How are you?” · “How’s the weather today?” · Day of the week check

1. SB pg 8 — vocabulary review

  • Review target vocabulary through actions and explanations. Get students to circle the word that you say.

2. Story Time

  • a) Character Introduction. Before opening the book say: “Today, we’re going to read a fun story! Let’s meet the characters!” Introduce each main character (Jindo, Boogi, Roo, Otto, Hoggy, Tigo) using the pictures in the book. You can also imitate the characters and have the students guess which one you are. Ask simple questions: “What’s this character’s name?” “What do they like to do?”
  • b) Picture Walk (pgs 10-11). Open to page 10. Before reading the text, focus on the illustrations. Ask open-ended questions: “What do you see in this picture?” “Where are they?” (Prompt by asking “Are they in a playground? Do you like playgrounds?”) “Why are they being mean to Roo?”

3. Interactive Reading — Student Book

  • Read the story aloud, one page at a time. Read slowly and clearly. Pause after each sentence or short phrase.
  • pg 10: have a look at the picture and ask students to identify all the different characters. “What did Jindo say?” “What did Hoggy say?”
  • pg 11: circle the character next to the horse and ask the students what that character says, and why Roo is sad.
  • pgs 12-13: ask students what kind of special day it is (Festival Day). Have the students circle what Roo is hiding, and say it out loud together so that the central theme of the story is reinforced.
  • pg 14: “What happens at the festival?”
  • pg 15: get students to circle different things that fly away and move because of the wind.

4. Reinforce vocabulary

  • Look at the vocabulary on each page after you do the reading. The students will practice sight words by doing this.
  • pg 10: look at the picture with the students and get them to mimic falling down. Practice saying ‘fall down’ together to strengthen the link between the word and image.
  • pg 11: show students two of the same objects and one different object in the classroom. Practice saying ‘different’ together.
  • pg 12: ask students where the characters are. Practice saying ‘festival’ together.
  • pg 13: ask them if they know why Roo hides her tail, using the picture provided. Practice saying ‘tail’ together.
  • pgs 14/15: ask them what happens when the wind blows. Make sound effects and use gestures to mimic the wind. Practice saying wind, blows, balloons, fly away, sweeps, cups, spin, dance, up, everything and flag together.
  • Allow them to engage as a whole so they don’t feel pressured to speak — this should improve engagement.

5. Wrap-up

  • Finish the class with the Goodbye song.
