Teaching guide

Original Teacher’s Guide. Each 40-minute lesson covers two guide periods.

1. Words and Story

W1 P1Intro to class theme + Vocabulary — Student Book (Words)

Lesson Goals

  • To introduce the unit theme and learn the target vocabulary
  • To encourage students to respond to English with actions and simple words

Students will be able to

  • Engage with emotion vocabulary
  • Show the correct gesture when the teacher says an emotion word

1. Warm-Up

Hello Song · “How are you?” · “How’s the weather today?” · Day of the week check

2. Introduce Characters (Student Book pg 4-5)

  • a) Name & Identification. Point to each character and say the name clearly. “This is Boogi. Everyone say, ‘Hello, Boogi!’” “This is Otto. Can you say, ‘Hi, Otto’?” “This is Hoggy. Everyone, ‘Hoggy!’” Review: point to a random character and ask, “Who is this?”
  • b) Engaging with Character Stories. “Who is the leader of the team?” (Boogi!) “Who likes to surf?” (Otto!) “Who is a food YouTuber?” (Hoggy!) “Who is Jindo looking for?” (Her owner!) “Tigo has a big imagination! What is he searching for?” (A mystery creature!)
  • c) Personal Connection. “Which character is the coolest?” or “Who do you want to play with?”
  • d) Game — Who Am I? i) Draw one character card from the deck without looking at it. ii) Place the card on your forehead while keeping your eyes closed. iii) Students answer only “Yes” or “No” as you guess: “Am I a lion?” “Do I have a long tail?” If the teacher guesses correctly within 5 questions, the teacher wins.

3. New Unit Introduction (Student Book pg 7)

  • Point to the playground scene and ask: “What do you see in the picture?” “How is Otto feeling?” “Can you point out Tigo?”
  • “Look at Hoggy. He is thinking about pizza and burgers! How does he feel? Is he hungry?”

4. Introduction to vocabulary (Student Book pg 8)

  • a) Introduction. Clearly pronounce each target word, have students repeat, and explain the phonics and pronunciation rules for each word.
  • b) Physical Demonstration — Happy: a big, bright smile, both arms in the air, a small jump of joy.
  • Angry: cross both arms tightly, frown deeply, make a slight “huff” sound while looking away.
  • Sleepy: tilt the head to the side, rest it on folded hands like a pillow, give a big yawn.
  • Shy: hunch the shoulders slightly, cover part of the face with one hand, look down or away with a small, timid smile.
  • Hungry: rub the tummy in a circular motion with one hand and say, “Yum, yum!”
  • Students copy the actions as they repeat the word.
  • c) Comprehension Check. Ask students if they know the meaning of the words. Encourage explanations in simple English or their native language if necessary.
  • d) Personal Connection. “Are you sleepy? When did you wake up?” “When are you angry?”
  • e) Point & Repeat (pg 8). Point to each picture. Say slowly: “Happy. Happy. Repeat after me.” Students repeat in chorus, then individually.
  • f) Circle & Say (pg 8). Teacher models: circle ‘Happy’ on the page → say “Happy.” Students take turns circling a word and saying it out loud.

5. Activity (Vocabulary) — The Magic Box of Feelings

  • Objective: to enhance emotional expression by using tactile props that represent specific feelings.
  • Materials: magic box, emotion cards + Joker cards.
  • a) Place emotion cards and Joker cards in the magic box.
  • b) A student picks one card from the box.
  • c) The whole class shows the facial expression of the target word. Happy: big smile! Sleepy: sleepy eyes and yawn!
  • d) Joker Twist: if the Joker card appears, everyone shouts “Joker!”, stands up and quickly switches seats with someone else.

6. Let’s Chant (Student Book pg 9)

  • “Now, we’re going to sing a song about sense! Listen carefully!” Play the song. Pause after each sentence and have students repeat the words. Play the song again for fun — faster or slower so that students can enjoy it.
  • Teacher Tip: use this chant repeatedly throughout the unit whenever students need a quick energy boost, transition, or mood change.

7. Wrap-up

  • Finish the class with the Goodbye song.
W1 P2Read Together + Workbook (Words)

Lesson Goals

  • To review and reinforce target vocabulary
  • To read a story together
  • To support understanding through pictures and repeated language

Students will be able to

  • Participate in the “Tail Tale” story (SB pgs. 10-21) with guidance from the teacher
  • Recognize and name the emotional vocabulary
  • Make connections with the song, vocabulary and feelings by sharing experiences

1. Warm-Up

Hello Song · “How are you?” · “How’s the weather today?” · Day of the week check

2. Vocabulary review (Student Book pg 8)

  • Review target vocabulary through actions and explanations.

3. Workbook pg 4-5 — Words

  • Guide students to match the emotion words with the correct facial expressions of Otto.
  • First point to the words and read each word aloud with the students to review their meanings.
  • Instruct students to look carefully at Otto’s face and body language in each row and circle the Otto that perfectly matches the emotion word on the left.

4. Story Time (Student Book pg 10-21)

  • a) Character Introduction. Before opening the book: “Today, we’re going to read a fun story about emotions! Let’s meet the characters!” Introduce Jindo, Boogi, Roo, Otto, Hoggy and Tigo, using pictures or puppets if available. “What’s this character’s name?” “What is their favorite place?”
  • Note for the teacher: skip the traditional picture walk for this lesson. This is a strategic decision to maintain suspense and keep students focused on the mystery of the funny tails.
  • b) Read together. Read the story aloud one page at a time, slowly and clearly, pausing after each sentence or short phrase. Use situational cues and the text to identify each character’s emotion, then have students predict the hidden animal from the mismatched tails before revealing the next page.
  • i) pg 10 — Boogi notices something strange about the other characters’ tails. Point to Boogi: “Look at Boogi! What is Boogi saying?” Read together: “Hmm… Your tails look funny!” “Let’s find out why they look funny!”
  • ii) pg 11-12 — “Look at Roo! What did she get? How does she feel?” “Wait! Is this Roo’s tail? It’s long and curly. What is this? Let’s turn the page!” “Aha! It was a monkey’s tail!” Read the full sentence: “I am happy like… a monkey!” Have students repeat.
  • iii) pg 13-14 — “Look at Otto! He is yawning. How does he feel? Is he sleepy?” “Wait! Is this Otto’s tail? It’s short and black. What is this? Let’s turn the page!” “Aha! It was a panda’s tail!” “I am sleepy like… a panda!” Have students repeat.
  • iv) pg 15-16 — “Look at Snowy! Her blocks are all fallen down. How does she feel?” “Wait! Is this Snowy’s tail? Whose tail is it? Let’s turn the page!” “Aha! It was a bull’s tail!” “I am angry like… a bull!” Have students repeat.
  • v) pg 17-18 — “Look at Hoggy! He is hiding behind the pole. How does he feel?” “Wait! Is this Hog’s tail? It’s short and green. What is this? Let’s turn the page!” “Aha! It was a turtle’s tail!” “I am shy like… a turtle!” Have students repeat.
  • vi) pg 19-20 — “Look at Tiger! He is rubbing his tummy. How does he feel?” “Wait! Is this Tigo’s tail? It’s curly and pink. What is this? Let’s turn the page!” “Aha! It was a pig’s tail!” “I am hungry like… a pig!” Have students repeat.
  • vii) pg 21 — Summarize the story and check the overall understanding of emotions. “Everyone has their own tail now! How do they feel?” Ask the final question: “How do you feel today?”
  • c) Read the story again and have students repeat after the teacher.

5. Wrap-up

  • Review target words with the [Let’s Chant] song, then finish the class with the Goodbye song.
