Teaching guide

Original Teacher’s Guide. Each 40-minute lesson covers two guide periods.

1. Words and Story

W1 P1Intro to class theme + Vocabulary — Student Book (Words)

Lesson Goals

  • To introduce the unit theme and learn the target vocabulary
  • To encourage students to respond to English with actions and simple words

Students will be able to

  • Name family members correctly
  • Ask and answer simple questions using “Where…?”

1. Warm-Up

Hello Song · “How are you?” · “How’s the weather today?” · Day of the week check

2. Introduce Characters (Student Book pg 4-5)

  • a) Name & Identification. “This is Boogi. Everyone say, ‘Hello, Boogi!’” “This is Otto. Can you say, ‘Hi, Otto’?” “This is Hoggy. Everyone, ‘Hoggy!’” Review: point to a random character and ask, “Who is this?”
  • b) Engaging with Character Stories. “Who is the leader of the team?” (Boogi!) “Who likes to surf?” (Otto!) “Who is a food YouTuber?” (Hoggy!) “Who is Jindo looking for?” (Her owner!) “Tigo has a big imagination! What is he searching for?” (A mystery creature!)
  • c) Personal Connection. “Which character is the coolest?” or “Who do you want to play with?”

3. Previous Unit Review & New Unit Introduction (Student Book pg 7)

  • a) Review the previous unit (action verbs) using the Otto family illustration. (Point to mom) “What is she doing? Yes, she is reading.” “Do you like to read?” (Point to sister) “Look at her. What is she doing?” (Point to Otto) “What is Otto doing? He is hungry! He is eating a snack.”
  • b) Introduce the New Unit Theme. Shift the focus from “what they are doing?” to “who they are”. “They live together in one house. Look at them all together.” “They are a family. Can you say it with me? Family!”

4. Vocabulary Introduction (Student Book pg 8)

  • a) Introduction. Clearly pronounce the target words and have students repeat. (where, mom, dad, sister, brother, family)
  • b) Physical Demonstration. Where: use a whispering, curious voice while looking left and right with a hand over your eyes. “Where, where, where is my book?”
  • Mom (index finger): wiggle your index finger. Use a warm, gentle, melodic voice while pretending to hug a baby. “Hello. I am Mom. I love my baby.”
  • Dad (thumb): wiggle your thumb. Use a very deep and slow voice.
  • Sister (ring finger): wiggle your ring finger. Use a high, sweet voice and pretend to put on a hairband or touch pigtails. “Hello. I am a sister. I am pretty!”
  • Brother (middle finger): wiggle your middle finger. Use a cool, energetic voice and pretend to kick a ball. “Hey! I am a brother. Let’s play soccer!”
  • Family (whole hand): open your hand as wide as you can and shake it joyfully! “One, two, three, four… We are family!”
  • c) Comprehension Check. (Show your thumb and use a deep voice) “Is this Mom?” → No! (Show your index finger and use a warm voice) “Is this Mom?” → Yes!
  • d) Personal Connection. “How many people are in your family?” “Do you have a sister?” “Do you like to play with your brother?” “Is your mom kind?” “Is your dad funny?”
  • f) Point & Repeat (pg 8). Show the page. Point to each picture. “Where. Where. Repeat after me.” Students repeat in chorus, then individually.
  • g) Circle & Say (pg 8). Teacher models circling ‘where’; students take turns circling a word and saying it out loud.

5. Activity (Vocabulary) — Who Is Missing?

  • Objectives: students identify the missing family member in a picture and use the target word “Where” to ask about the missing person.
  • Materials: PPT slides with a full family photo and versions where one or two members have disappeared.
  • a) Show the first slide with the full family. “Look! This is a family. Who is here? Here is mom, dad, and the sister and brother!”
  • b) Switch to a slide where mom is gone. “Oh no! Someone is gone! Who is missing?” (mom!) “Where is she?”
  • c) Continue the slides for dad, sister, and brother.
  • d) Increase the difficulty by showing slides where two characters have disappeared at once. “Wait! It’s too empty! Who is missing now?”

6. Let’s Chant (Student Book pg 9)

  • Play the Family Member Song. Pause after each verse. Have students repeat the family members and actions. Play the song again for fun!
  • Teacher Tip: Use this chant repeatedly throughout the unit whenever students need a quick energy boost, transition, or mood change.

6. Wrap-up

  • Finish the class with the Goodbye song.
W1 P2Read Together + Workbook (Words)

Lesson Goals

  • To review and reinforce target vocabulary
  • To read a story together
  • To support understanding through pictures and repeated language

Students will be able to

  • Identify and say family words
  • Follow and use family words in the story
  • Respond to the story using the key question “Where is…?”

1. Warm-Up

Hello Song · “How are you?” · “How’s the weather today?” · Day of the week check

2. Vocabulary review (Student Book pg 8)

  • Review target vocabulary through actions and explanations.

3. Workbook pg 4 — Words

  • a) Point to each word (mom, dad, sister, brother, family). Say the word clearly and have students repeat.
  • b) “Now trace the lines with your pencil.” Students follow the dotted path from each family member to the correct word.
  • c) Walk around and help students match the characters with the correct labels.

4. Workbook pg 5 — Words

  • a) “Find the word ‘mom’!” Have students point to all the circles with mom inside.
  • b) “Color all the ‘mom’ circles!”
  • c) After they finish, ask: “How many ‘mom’ words did you color?”

5. Story Time (Student Book pg 10-21)

  • a) Character Introduction. “Today, we’re going to read a fun story about a family! Let’s meet the characters!” Introduce Tigo, Tigo’s mom, dad, sister and brother.
  • Note for the teacher: skip the traditional picture walk for this lesson to keep students engaged with Tigo’s perspective without spoiling the story.
  • b) Read together, one page at a time, slowly and clearly, pausing after each sentence. This story is designed as an interactive hide-and-seek game: use the visual clues on the front page, then have students predict “Who is it?” before turning the page for the reveal.
  • i) pg 10-11: Show the happy family. “Look at Tigo’s family! Everyone is here. Tigo’s Mom, Dad, Sister, and Brother. Where are they? They are having a picnic! What is Tigo doing?”
  • ii) pg 12: Introduce the problem and the word “Where.” “Tigo is waking up. But… oh no!” “Where is mom? Where is dad? Can you see Tigo’s sister?” “Where is Tigo’s family?”
  • iii) pg 13-14: Point to the ears in the bush. “Look at the bush! I see ears and glasses. Is it Tigo’s dad? Let’s turn the page!” “Gotcha! It’s Tigo’s dad!”
  • iv) pg 15-16: Identify mom’s legs. “Look at the tree! I see two yellow legs. Is it Tigo’s mom? Let’s turn the page!” “Gotcha! It’s Tigo’s mom!”
  • v) pg 17-18: Point to the bag and identify hands/paws. “Look at the bag! I see two little hands. Is it Tigo’s brother? Let’s turn the page!” “Gotcha! It’s Tigo’s brother!”
  • vi) pg 19-20: Identify the sister’s face among flowers. “Look at the flowers! I see a cute nose. Is it Tigo’s sister? Let’s turn the page!” “Gotcha! It’s Tigo’s sister!”
  • vii) pg 21: Everyone celebrates together. “Yay, everyone is here! mom, dad, sister, brother… and Tigo.”
  • c) Read the story again and have students repeat after the teacher.

6. Wrap-up

  • Review target words with the [Let’s Chant] song, then finish the class with the Goodbye song.
